A scar usually implies the past tense. It implies that an injury occurred somewhere in the past, a healing process and an imprint that will never be recovered. However, scars are not only associated with the past; they also affect the present and the future. In times of epidemics and wars, scars are frequently brought up, in both physical and spiritual aspects. Scars have appeared in many forms in the narrative of human civilization and have become an inevitable topic for humans - people have to encounter and cope with scars, physically and mentally. This thesis will make a study based on the documentation and re-expression of scars, starting from physical scars, recording the story behind the scars and considering how scars exist as a neutral imprint. Ultimately, the project aims to destigmatize scars and encourage people to accept their scars and heal the trauma beneath the scars, empowering viewers to know, think, remember, and self-examine.
Scars Happening is a pamphlet for Thesis Research. It includes 8 works relating to "scars" as the design responses in the form of posters, photography, material experiments, and 3D art. The pamphlet is thread-bound by hand with a red thread symbolizing the scar and suture. The hollowed out parts also form a stereoscopic and touchable scar.
